How do you know what type of hydrangea you have? Hydrangeas are so confusing because there are several different ones.I break these down into two categories: prune a lot and barely touch. Prune a lot: panicles, like limelights and bobos; and arborescens (“smooth”), like Annabelles and incrediballs. Leave alone: macrophylla/“big leaf” or “mop head”hydrangea and oakleafs. They require little care. It’s really only the clearing out of the dead stems occasionally on the big leafs that is required. (

I post a lot of hydrangea content but I’m still getting a lot of questions so I’m just going to keep going! 😆 This kind of hydrangea is a macrophylla. (The “Old wood” type). New growth is coming in on the bottom and the buds that formed last year are the flowers for this year. I don’t think any of these are active because of a major cold snap but maybe we’ll be surprised. I waited a while to see what was going to happen to mine and chopped them back a few days ago because there was no buds gree
